This could generate some discussion as everybody has reasons for liking or disliking a particular season, but in regards to playing the game of airsoft what season is prime?

Weather does play a factor in an outdoor airsoft skirmish and the wrong kind of weather could certainly hinder even the most miticulously planned scenario game. So lets look at a few types of weather and see what is good and bad about them regarding airsoft.

Sun: We’ve got to have it, but we don’t want too much of it. A warm temperature is favorable as cold fingers tend to lose dexterity, however sweltering heat doesn’t bode well for scenarios that could last hours. Especially carrying gear and wearing full uniforms, too much sun is not what we want. But the right balance of warm and cool will put a smile on the face of any combatant.

Rain: While playing in the rain can be a lot of fun it can also be disastarous to our finely tuned equipment. A little rain however won’t hurt too much, right?

Fog: Now this could be cool. Imagine creeping stealthily through the fog, advancing unseen on enemy positions, the only problem is you can’t see them either. Fog will certainly up the excitement and anticipation of the impending action of combat. Plus you can save that smoke grenade for a sunny day.

Snow: Time to take the white rattle can to your AEG. Snow poses speficic problems for the airsofter looking for stealth. Of course there are arctic BDUs and other types of camoflage for white conditions. It’s the cold I’d really be concerned with. As we mentioned we become a little less agile when our body gets cold, and the electrics don’t work as well in the cold either.

It’s hard to draw concrete conclusions of the perfect weather for airsoft, but we do know that we would like to avoid extremes. This leads me to say that fall, at least out here in California, is a great season for airsoft. Not too hot, not too cold, some overcast days, not too much rain/snow and the right time for a little fog.

There are many questions when it comes to choosing an airsoft sidearm and when choosing when to use it. One thing that is not making the choice any less complicated is the fact that today there are many quality airsoft hand guns to choose from.

Airsoft is not one of these sports even though the sport does use a ball of sorts, albeit very small and not just one. So should airsoft be called something else? Something with “ball” in the name like “Paintball”?

By the way, where did the name Airsoft originate? By some quick research online one cal tell that airsoft originated in Japan in the ’70s but there seems to be no mention of why the name “Airsoft” was chosen. Perhaps this was a term used in order to assure the public that these guns were a safe alternative to actual firearms. Either way that’s what it is and I would say it’s not a bad choice. “Soft-ball” was already taken, “Air-ball” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

You might be thinking, “well airsoft uses BBs and at least that implies the word ball..” Well actually that is not really the case the word BB came from the designation of the size of projectile not from “ball bearing” like alot of us think.

So we are left to muse the origins of the name of the game, however we can muse gladly, as knowing why the game is called airosft is not a requisite to enjoying it.

Well how do you maximize the range of your rifle? What are the factors to consider when trying to make your airsoft rifle sniper ready?

Power. You have got to have a rifle with relatively high FPS. The power to project a plastic BB over a long distance is the foundation for a sniper rifle. Seeing that you will not want to be seen, the power to push through brush and branches is also essential. Sniper rifles should shoot starting at 400 FPS or higher these speeds can be achieved by all three types of airsoft power; Spring, Gas and Electric. One obstacle is that if you are playing in a regulated match you will most likely be limited on your allowed velocity. Some scenario games and airsoft arenas have sniper designations which allow a player to shoot at a higher FPS.

How about Hop Up?

Hop up is a technology that uses a contact to add backspin on the projected bb. The backspin minimizes drag and allows for greater distance. Most hop-up systems are adjustable which allows the user to dial in accuracy. Hop up has advanced recently with new BAXS tecnology offered by some manufacturers. BAXS uses dual contact points providing more accuracy than standard hop-up. Some BAXS systems are fully adjustable meaning you can put the contact points exactly where you need them to be for the most distance and accuracy.

Using the right weight of BB also should improve distance and accuracy. A BB with greater mass should be less affected by wind and drag. You should shoot nothing less than a .20 gram BB when sniping

While some models were available before from such names as Armalite, today many more firearm companies are realizing the benefit of licensing airsoft products.

Today airsoft fans can find officially licensed airsoft products with names like, Kalashnikov, Colt, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, DPMS, Beretta, Taraus and more. These new models are featuring logos and design traits that have been known to take unlicensed products off the market for trade dress copyright violations.

Of course not everybody is on board yet (come on Glock), but savvy firearm companies know that licensing airsoft products is a profitable venture that will eventually lead to greater name recognition and expand the market reach of their products.

While we may have to wait for an officially licensed airsoft model of our favorite hand gun, the wait is over for some of the most popular guns in history.
